Karen Kawawada Waterloo ON Obituary, Death: The University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science is mourning the loss of Karen Kawawada, a dedicated communications manager whose creativity, generosity, and professionalism left a lasting impact on colleagues and the wider community.

Karen began her career at Waterloo in 2010, working with Communications and Public Affairs and the Faculty of Environment. Over the next decade, she gained senior communications experience across Canada, England, and New Zealand before returning to Waterloo in 2024 to lead strategic communications at the School of Optometry & Vision Science. In this role, she helped raise the profile of the School’s teaching, research, and clinical programs with exceptional skill and care.

Colleagues remember Karen for her passion and quiet dedication. She championed groundbreaking research, highlighted student achievements, and shared the School’s impact across Canada and beyond—often without seeking recognition. Among her key contributions, Karen led communications for the ongoing campaign supporting the new Waterloo Eye Institute and guided messaging during the relocation of the School’s public clinics, navigating complex logistics with patience and clarity.

“Beyond her professional accomplishments, Karen will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and the way she made people feel heard and supported,” said Dr. Ben Thompson, the School’s director. “Her work stands as a testament to the grace with which she lived and the passion she shared.”

Karen’s loss will be deeply felt across the University, as well as among friends and collaborators in the communications field. Her colleagues and community extend heartfelt condolences to her family and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
