Matthew Powell Morgantown WV Obituary, Death: The Morgantown community is mourning the loss of Matthew William Powell, 19, who passed away on February 24, 2026. Born on May 10, 2006, in Morgantown, Powell was a devoted son, brother, and friend, known for his integrity, humor, and compassion.

A 2024 graduate of University High School, Powell was a member of the National Honor Society and the track team, demonstrating both academic excellence and athletic dedication. He continued his education as a sophomore psychology major at West Virginia University (WVU), where he was admired by peers and professors alike for his curiosity and drive.

Beyond academics, Powell had a deep love for WVU sports, fitness, and spending time with family and friends. Those who knew him recall his kind nature, quick humor, and the joy he brought to every room he entered.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William K. and Joyce Miller, and is survived by his parents, Matt and Laura Powell, his sister Megan, paternal grandparents Rodney and Kathy Powell, and extended family including aunt Angela (John) Durig, uncle Mark (Courtney) Powell, and cousins Brayden and Brynley Powell.

Family and friends will honor Powell at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 S. High St., Morgantown, on March 3-4, 2026, with a funeral service officiated by Pastor Brian Knight. He will be laid to rest at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

Matthew Powell’s life, though tragically short, left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the Morgantown community, remembered for his warmth, kindness, and infectious spirit.
